Contraceptive methods are preventive measures which help women to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Multiple measures are available to prevent pregnancies resulting from the coitus. These measures can be either temporary or permanent.
It is now recognized that there can never be an ideal contraceptive which is safe, effective, inexpensive, widely acceptable, long lasting and requiring little or no medical supervision. Further, a contraceptive method suitable for one group may not be suitable for another because of socio-economic beliefs, cultural and religious patterns. As there is no single method available to meet socio-cultural & religious aspects of individuals the search for an “ideal contraceptive” has been given up. Therefore, the present approach in family planning prog
rams is to provide “cafeteria choice” where the couple is allowed to choose from all available offers to promote the family planning as a way of life.
Condoms are one of the oldest and widely used methods of barrier contraception. Barrier methods require high degree of motivation on the part of the user. In this method the erectile penis is covered by a very thin rubber which is made up of latex. It is about 17.5-18 cm in length and 4-4.5 cm in diameter. It is available freely in market and found in rolled form sealed in a packet. Condoms provide protection not only against pregnancy but also against sexually transmitted diseases.
Condoms are put on the erect penis before sexual intercourse. The teat is compressed to expel the air from it so as to make room for the ejaculate. It should be held carefully while drawing it from the vagina to avoid spilling of seminal fluid into vagina after intercourse. Condoms should never be reused and a new condom should be used each time you have sex. It is the only temporary method available for the male partner which has no side effects. It is also pre tested electronically therefore there is no need for testing its integrity by the user.
Studies have found that condoms can be highly effective method of contraception, if they are used correctly, consistently and carefully during intercourse. So guys, sorry for the boring post but stay wise and use a condom.
